Marghanita Laski's The Tower is an interesting book about life in London, England during the 1940-50s. This was a time where there was a great fear of German invasion after World War II and this fear made citizens more or less paranoid. All people were living under constant surveillance, which seemed to cause them to be unhappy with their lives. There are many different views on the subject of surveillance that are presented in Laski's book through different characters' perspectives. For instance, one woman talks about how her children become more rebellious due to being watched so much because it corrupts their perspective on life and becomes what could be anticipated from watching the programs on TV rather than learning about things themselves. Also, using the surveillance as a way to control is an idea that is presented in the book where the government forces people to sign up for benefits but then take that money away from them. Another view on surveillance through Laski's book is the idea that people are being watched because they are being judged unfairly. For instance, one woman states “The whole of London seemed intent on watching me” (Laski 134) because she thinks it's unfair for everybody to always be looked at. This idea is reinforced later when Laski writes “It was never safe to be alone” (Laski 238). This causes people to feel as if they are being watched and judged at all times, eventually turning them into unhappy people. Overall the book highlights the idea that surveillance can cause people to be unhappy because of the constant feeling of not being able to be themselves. This is an interesting idea that is backed up by the different perspectives on surveillance in Laski's The Tower .
